Differences Between NCAA Division I, II and III

The D3 Recruiting Hub is geared towards providing information on the recruiting process at the NCAA Division III level for families and student athletes. So one of the first things we want to discuss are some differences between Division I, II and III.

One of the most important differences is money—specifically scholarships.  At NCAA Division I and II schools, student athletes can receive athletic scholarships.  At NCAA Division III schools, student athletes cannot .  Let’s repeat that, at NCAA Division III institutions, student athletes cannot receive scholarship money to play a sport.

However, student athletes, like non-student athletes at NCAA Division III schools, can receive other types of financial awards.  Many Division III schools offer merit scholarships based upon criteria such as high school class rank, SAT scores, GPA and so forth.  Also, there are other scholarships that Division III schools offer which may be institution specific.  There are scholarships for specific programs like Nursing or Engineering or Math as well, so be sure to check with the individual school. There are also Pell Grants, work study programs and loans which can help finance the cost of a college education as well.

The bottom line is this-do your homework. Find out what each institution has to offer you.  Get to know the folks in the Financial Aid office- call them, ask them lots of questions.  They are there to help.  And realize that you are not going to get paid to play at an NCAA Division III school.
